Delete Account

What deleting does
Deleting your account isn't instant erasure — it's a 30-day tombstone. The moment you delete, your profile is anonymized: your name becomes "Deleted User", and your avatar, username, and contact email are cleared. You're signed out and can no longer be identified in the app. If that first step fails for any reason, the whole deletion is aborted and nothing else happens — we don't want a half-deleted account.
What's removed
Once your profile is anonymized, we delete the data that's genuinely just yours:
- Your friend connections
- Pending invitations you sent or received
- Invite links you created
- Your push notification token
- Your own notification feed
- Your avatar image file
What's kept, and why
Your expenses, expense splits, settlements, group memberships, and entries in each group's activity log all stay. These aren't only yours — they're part of a shared ledger other people in your groups depend on. Deleting them would silently change what your former groupmates are owed, which isn't something a deletion request from you should be allowed to do to someone else. That data stays attached to the anonymized "Deleted User" profile instead of your name, so balances stay correct and nobody else's history breaks.
The 30-day grace period
After you delete, your account isn't locked right away. For 30 days, signing back in with your original email, password, or Google/Apple account restores you: the app calls a restore-account step that clears the deletion flag, and you go through the identity setup again to re-enter your name, username, and avatar. Everything else — expenses, groups, settlements — was never touched, so it's all still there.
If you don't sign back in within 30 days, the deletion finalizes: your email is scrambled and the account is permanently banned, freeing your original email address for a fresh signup if you ever want one. At that point the tombstone is permanent and there's no more restoring it.
How to delete from inside the app
- Open Divide It and go to the Profile tab
- Scroll to the Account section
- Tap Delete Account
- Type DELETE in the confirmation field to enable the button, then tap Delete Account again
You'll be asked a short, optional exit survey question about why you're leaving before you're signed out. Answering it is entirely optional — skipping it doesn't change or delay the deletion.
Requesting deletion by email
If you can't sign in — lost access to your email, stuck device, anything else — you don't need the app to request deletion. Email support@divideit.io from the address on your account and ask us to delete it. We'll confirm your identity and process the same tombstone deletion described above, grace period included.
